BLOOD ORANGES
Blood oranges belong to the family of pigmented oranges. Their flesh is very characteristic being part red and part orange. Such oranges are only found in the orchards of the provinces of Catania, Siracusa and a small part of Enna. The special microclimate of this area gives the oranges their unique pigmentation. It is worth noting that the same trees planted elsewhere would produce ‘blonde’ oranges, without the characteristic colouring and with lower vitamin and anthocyanin levels. Our oranges are therefore ‘unique’ and ‘inimitable’, they have even been assigned the IGP label, a mark of high quality.

HEALTH
Our oranges are about 87% water, have low fat and protein levels, contain many minerals including calcium, phosphorus, potassium, iron, selenium and above all are rich in vitamins (they contain vitamin C, A, B1 and B2). Oranges are also a low calorie fruit containing only around thirty-four calories per hundred grams of juice. The fibre in the pith under the skin regulates the absorption of sugars, fats and protein helping to avoid diabetes and arteriosclerosis. It also aids transit of food through the intestine aiding digestion.

Citric acid performs another important function in the body: it decreases acidity and diminishes the acidity of our urine (helping to prevent the growth of kidney stones). It also protects the vitamin C content in the pulp of the fruit.
Humans need about 50mg of vitamin C every day, which can be obtained by eating 2 to 3 oranges.
